Deliberative process for integrating AI into teaching and learning at the University of Malaga.
DiversIA is a deliberative process that seeks to identify standards for the responsible, ethical, and inclusive use of AI, with the goal of generating useful recommendations for the university community. It employs a participatory and inclusive methodology that facilitates debate and informed decision-making.
Deliberative processes, such as the one proposed by DiversIA, are designed to open spaces for debate and informed decision-making. They are characterized by being inclusive and representative, incorporating stages for learning, deliberation, and decision-making to propose innovative solutions and recommendations resulting from the integration of diverse opinions. This methodology is widely used to address complex and/or controversial issues. Multiple examples can be found at both national and international levels, such as the European Commission’s European Citizens’ Panels (addressing topics like the fight against hate in society, energy efficiency, or food waste reduction) or the Spanish Government’s Citizens’ Climate Assembly.

This process has been designed by Coglobal in alliance with the University of Malaga and is supported by the guidance and consultancy of the People Powered network, within the framework of the Digital Democracy Accelerator program. This program funds and advises collaborative proposals between civil entities and governments to involve citizens in decision-making regarding digital issues, such as AI.
Coglobal and the University of Malaga have been collaborating for several years through the Agora Infantil program and the PsicologoDiversa participatory budgeting process (2022-2023 and 2023-2024) at the Faculty of Psychology and Speech Therapy. Building on this partnership, they submitted a proposal to the Digital Democracy Accelerator program, which was selected from 218 projects. The proposal, along with 12 others (from Spain, Denmark, the United Kingdom, Poland, Greece, Romania, Germany, Bulgaria, and France), was chosen to develop a participatory process on the use of AI at the University of Malaga, being one of only two universities selected as governing institutions.
